AVT50H Mod....one of the few that works

Postby Satch0922 » Mon Jun 02, 2008 12:51 am

I have an AVT50 head with a JCM4x12 cab. While it's not a JCM800, 900 or 2000, I have always thought it was enough for me, the weekend warrior.

Recently I took a few of my guitars in for a full set up and asked the guy (who will remain unnamed) about what my next amp should be. He asked me what I currently had and what I used it for. Immediately he complimented the amp and asked if I had modded it in any way. I told him no and that I had thought of experimenting with pre amp tubes. He told me that was a waste of time but told me of a simple mod that would do wonders for the amp......"get rid of the reverb tank!!!!" He promised me that this would make the amp warm up and be a near full tube amp tone.

To make a long story short, I did just that and I am very impressed by the improvement. It is not a full tube amp but I can tell you, it made a big difference in the tone of this head. I rarely used much if any reverb to start with but he told me that even turning the reverb to zero left the entire circuit active. He was right. If you like or need reverb, use a good pedal and put it in the effects loop.

The process is simple, just open her up and unplug the reverb tank!

Update: I have to assume this would apply to any AVT amp.

Sounds good Satch, glad it worked for u.

Im guessing the lack of replies is there isn't many AVT owners on here. Maiden was an AVT fan, but he's on a DSL now, other than him, i can't think of too many other AVT owners off the top of my head. I don't think anyone would be snobbing u though.

Actually, I have an AVT50 combo that I use for home and some smaller studio stuff. Good to know. I think I'll give it a try in the next day or two.

Worth a try I suppose. Anything to improve it would be. I will give it a try but thankfully I have a Single Recto now which I will be using instead. I will keep the AVT50 for a back up as I doubt I would get much for it.

Interesting post. I will have to dig my ValveState 100 out of the 'Ol Amp Pile and have another listen to the reverb. This is a trip what you mentioned here, 'cause the last time I used my ValveState I thought I was noticing something strange goin' on with the reverb and the noise threshold of the amp. :+

I have an AVT150combo with the extension cab and it sounds okay for bedroom practice, that is as long as I haven't been playing my TSL100 with the MM tranny and choke, compared to tube amps.....the AVT series is a great value IMO......it's biggest problem is that it's sonic depth is very thin and just can't cut though "on-stage volume"......but that's what tube amps are for.......I will say that the FX Loop is weird though.....the on-board effects are all decent, but I'm a very "anti'reverb" type of guitarist I never really used the verb much on the thing......

the main thing is that you found a way to improvethe the tone of the amp.....

Okay, I gotta ask...
I just unplug the wires from the back of the switch, right?

Unplug the reverb from a DSL401 and the reverb knob acts kinda like a presence knob. :+
